What are the eligibility requirements for applying as an international student to study in Taiwan?
Please ensure you meet the following criteria:
- You have never studied in Taiwan as an overseas Chinese student.
- You have not been assigned for admission in the current academic year by the University Entrance Committee for Overseas Chinese Students under the Regulations Regarding Study and Counseling Assistance for Overseas Chinese Students in Taiwan.
What are the requirements for Overseas Chinese students (including students from Hong Kong or Macao)?
You are considered an Overseas Chinese student (including students from Hong Kong or Macao) if you meet any of the following criteria:
- You were born overseas and have continuously resided there until now, or you have resided overseas for more than six consecutive years and hold a permanent or long-term residence certificate from your place of residence.
- You hold a permanent residence certificate issued by the governments of Hong Kong or Macao and have resided in Hong Kong, Macao, or another foreign country for more than six years.
How can I determine if my Chinese proficiency meets the application requirements?
Each school and program has different requirements for Chinese proficiency. Some programs are taught entirely in English and will only check if the student’s English proficiency meets the standards, while other programs are taught in Chinese and will have basic Chinese proficiency requirements. It is recommended to check the admission information of each school and program before applying.
Scholarships
Are there any scholarships available during my studies in Taiwan?
The Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Taiwan, as well as various universities, offer scholarships for international students studying in Taiwan:
- MOFA Taiwan Scholarship & MOE Taiwan Scholarship: International students can apply for the Taiwan Scholarship, granted by the central government, through a Taiwan Overseas Representative Office before their arrival in Taiwan. Part-time Job
Can foreign students work while studying in Taiwan?
Yes, you can. If you plan to work during your studies, please note the following:
- You need to obtain a work permit.
- The maximum weekly working hours are 20, except during summer and winter vacations.

Do I need to join Taiwan’s National Health Insurance (NHI)?
According to Taiwan government regulations, foreign students who obtain a valid residence permit while studying in Taiwan must join the National Health Insurance (NHI) after residing in Taiwan for at least 6 months. During the first 6 months in Taiwan before joining NHI, students are required to join the group insurance plan for injury and medical care (group insurance).
If I don’t want to live in university dormitories, how can I rent an apartment off-campus?
If you wish to rent an apartment off-campus, Hidewey provides assistance with finding suitable accommodation and completing the rental procedures.
Although I meet the school’s admission criteria, I’m concerned that my Chinese language skills might not be sufficient for studying and living in Taiwan.
